This post is part of the What We Wish We Knew When We Started Blogging series. In this post, I'll share reader reviews about blog hosting, domains, and platforms , as well as my personal experiences and tips.

There are always different opinions on which blogging platform and hosting method is best, but there were some recurring themes as readers discussed the topic. I will try to summarize the main topic:

The most common regrets are starting with some free blogging platforms (especially Blogger.com) and starting with a domain and using the free subdomain URLs they provide instead of self-hosting.

While it makes sense to try blogging on some free platforms, my advice to anyone serious about blogging is to get a good domain and set it up on the platform you're considering. They last a long time.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to blogging platforms, and while I personally prefer my WordPress.org (not to be confused with WordPress.com) site, whatever blogging platform you choose should be right for that blogger. Choice. Try a few and see which one works best for you, but remember that the decisions you make early on can affect your future blog. There are import functions for switching from many platforms, but it's easy to choose the right one from the start.

My experience with domains, platforms and hosting

I started with blogspot.com (blogger.com) domain and platform. While this was a great way to test my interest in blogging (I was shut down within hours of starting), I quickly transitioned from this setup to my own blog (mobile first) with a professionally designed and self-contained blogging tool. When I did this, I saw a huge increase in traffic and gained more respect from other bloggers and readers. I'm not sure if it's because of the design, the feature-rich blogging platform (Blogger.com was so primitive back then that they didn't even have built-in comments), or just me being alone. domain, but I suspect it's a combination of everything.

When I started blogging more seriously and trying to make money, I started creating new blogs. My "mistake" (ironically one of the reasons for my success) was starting new blogs on the same domain as my first blog (a domain that had nothing to do with the topics I was writing about). This was a big mistake in some ways because it made blogging difficult to tag and impossible to sell. One aspect of this "mistake" is that since they share an established and popular blog domain, they are very well positioned in the search engines from the first weeks and therefore increase the number of blogs. Very fast reading.

I have learned from my "mistakes" in subsequent blogs. For example, ProBlogger and School of Digital Photography. Of course, there are also regrets. I couldn't protect Problogger.com, so I chose .net (and protected .com for a lot of money). However, after setting up my main blog on the .net version, I regret not putting more effort into getting a .com domain. I don't like the hyphens in the URL on digital-photography-school.com. But again, the owner of the other version of the domain wants an insane amount for it, so I gave up.

My advice is if you are serious about blogging, get the best hosting you can afford. Getting it "right" from the first few days will reduce pain later. But remember, despite my mistakes, I've managed to create some pretty successful blogs. The domain name and platform you choose are just two of the many elements that go into a successful blog. They are important, but if they break, they are not dead in the water.
