You're a blogger, so I hope you feel confident working with words.
But words alone are not enough.
If you haven't blogged in a while (or just started), you've probably noticed that numbers appear a lot in other people's posts.
you often see numbers in job titles, e.g

Even if they don't appear in the header of a post, numbers can be used to list a series of steps, list a set of tips, or link to statistics.
Why are numbers so important?
Using numbers in your message will make you a more authoritative source of information.
Readers are also interested in numbers. If you name ten ways, they will want to know what they are. If you tell them you made $2,671 from your first product release, they'll want to know how.
Here are four ways to use numbers in your blog posts.
- When you share your (or someone else's) results, whether it's traffic, fans, revenue, or anything else you can track.
- When statistics are given. It can be something familiar or completely incomprehensible.
- While I am listing a series of steps. These steps can be all or part of your text.
- When you share tips or ideas, it's usually in the form of a list post.
How they can work for you.
#1: Share your (or someone else's) results
Blog posts that talk about real results are often popular because they show that someone else has succeeded and give readers hope that they can too. Numbers like "3,241 Facebook fans" and "$453,000" in the headlines of my previous posts can help the reader trust your information. It should be useful as it is very specific.
Tip: Sometimes it's convenient to round numbers (eg "I have over 20,000 subscribers to my mailing list"). But if you share your results in a post, the individual numbers will show that the results are correct.
#2: Provide statistics
It's easy to give advice on your blog without requiring approval. You know your place well and therefore know that your advice is accurate. But readers won't necessarily believe you without proof. Here's an example from Copyblogger's classic post on writing headlines that get results :
On average, 8 out of 10 people will read the headline, while the rest will read only 2 out of 10. This is the secret of the power of the headline and why it is such a strong determinant of the effectiveness of the entire article.
The statistics make it clear that this information is credible and based on facts, not someone else's opinion on whether the headlines are relevant or not.
Tip: Of course, your statistics should be accurate and precise. Try to find an original or reliable source, such as a government or university website. It is often helpful to provide a link to the source.
#3: List of steps to follow
If your post teaches the reader how to do something, or contains steps they should follow in order, numbering those steps doesn't make sense. The reader can jump from your message to the task they are trying to complete, so you need to make it easy for them to remember which step to take.
In these types of posts, a number in the header often works well. For example, instead of "How to register a domain name," you might have "How to register a domain name in six easy steps."
Tip: Try not to take too many steps. Having 20 or 30 steps can overwhelm the reader, even though each step can be completed relatively quickly. Instead, try grouping each activity into five to ten separate steps.
#4: Share tips or ideas
This differs from the step-by-step approach in that each tip or idea in your post will stand on its own. The reader can handle them however he likes and try just one or two of them.
It's still good for everyone. Not only will this help the reader navigate your message, but it will also prove that you delivered on what you promised (if you used numbers in your headline).
Tip: It's best to work with large numbers in this type of post. While 100 steps to creating the perfect website sounds daunting, 100 different ways to make your website stand out sounds like a comprehensive resource that readers can access.
Using numbers in your post (and especially in your headline) can take a few minutes of extra work. But it can lead to a more popular and influential publication.
