The 80/20 principle or Pareto principle is widely recognized and accepted in business. The principle states that different causes or efforts lead to most results.

In business, this is easily seen in many cases:

80% of the company's profits go to 20% of its customers.
80% of a company's sales come from 20% of its products.
80% of customer complaints come from 20% of customers

The 80/20 principle is not an exact equation, but the fundamental truth of the principle is that the distribution is not equal . It's about understanding the imbalance between effort and results. The split will not always be exactly 80/20, for example 90/10, it may be 99/1, but not 50/50.

Understanding how to apply the 80/20 principle to blogging can increase your productivity and ultimately your success.

Where do you spend your time?

The first step in applying the 80/20 principle is to analyze what you spend your blogging time on. There are many tools to help you, but I use Rescue Time.

RescueTime is a program that you install on your computer that aims to measure your computer's activity time. (There are both free and paid versions, but I find the free version to be perfect for what I need.) It's just a question of which app is targeted, or "over the top." RescueTime stops allocating time to this program when it detects that your computer is idle, that is, you have not performed any action for a certain period of time.

You can then go to your dashboard to analyze your time usage or wait for the weekly email to arrive and see how productive you are. Rescue Time helps you categorize sites and apps as productive or entertaining and generates a weekly performance score.

Whatever tool you use, the most important thing is to have reliable data on how you spend your time. According to a recent study, humans are bad at estimating how we use our time and how long we work:

For example, the average person who reported working 40 hours actually worked about 37 hours. The report found that "the higher the score, the more exaggerated the statement"; Those who reported working 75 hours actually worked closer to 50 hours. (That's 25 hours, a 50% overestimate!) At the other end of the spectrum, those who worked relatively few hours (less than 25) actually underestimated their hours. { formula }

A tool like Rescue Time takes the guesswork out of you and gives you statistics to analyze.

As bloggers, we work in a crowded environment. We build audiences on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with large paid teams working on how to get and keep our attention. It's easy to check our Facebook page for five to 35 minutes before scrolling through the latest viral memes. No matter how harsh the truth, we need to be honest with ourselves about the time we spend on these platforms and the value they provide.

By analyzing your time, you will discover where your efforts pay off the most and where you can spend your time.

Armed with your data, it's time to change. Ask yourself the following questions:

Which tasks yield the most results?
What work should I devote more time to?
Am I devoting time to activities that help me achieve my goals?
Can you get rid of work?
Can I automate tasks?
What tasks can be grouped together?

Now the hardest part begins when you know the answer. To increase your productivity, you can't change the way you work, you have to change what you work on.

It's easier to waste your time doing important things than doing something important. Some important activities like creating killer content, creating ebooks, and creating courses require a lot of knowledge and make your brain work hard. Working hard requires concentration and practice in a task.

It's a practice that not only increases your productivity through the quality and quantity of your blog posts, but also the sense of accomplishment you gain when you take on a difficult task and finish it!
