Think your blog has hit a plateau?
Maybe your readership is stagnating, subscriptions seem stagnant but not growing, and you're struggling to make more money from your loyal subscriber base.
What should you do?
There are many ways to start off this plateau and move on to a new phase of blog growth. What's right for you will depend on your blogging niche, audience, skills, and what you've tried.
However, I thought I'd round up some starting points that I've used to shift gears on my blog over the years. You may have tried some of these ideas, but I hope there's something you haven't tried.
Protect your environment first
You've created a blog with a loyal following, so why not use it as a starting point for your future growth? By observing what works, you can refine your approach in this area to make it more effective and identify areas for improvement.
Another thing that can be achieved with such a review is to allow time to focus on a new assignment. By seeing what works, you can identify what isn't and reduce your losses. This will help you strengthen your position, get the most out of your investment and give you a clear view of new ideas and markets (more on that in a moment).
Message overview
Take time to analyze which posts are working to help you achieve your goals.
These goals can be readership metrics, long-term search traffic, social media shares, or something else. But whatever your goals are, decide which posts are best for achieving each goal.
With this information, you can take the time to write articles and focus on creating the content that will best serve to maintain your blog's current market position. This will give you a solid foundation to continue using the other methods we will discuss.
Promotion overview
Some advertising channels must perform better than others. Identify them and reduce your losses on channels that are not working as expected or promising.
Again, we're reinforcing your current position here, so it's important to know the facts about what works and what doesn't to drive readers to your site.
Evaluate the conversion method
Whether you're using a sales funnel or a free funnel, review the funnel to make sure it's working optimally. We have some great content on ProBlogger to help you out (see How to Optimize Your Sales Funnel for Success).
Try to structure your presentation as much as possible to increase future readers and conversions. So make regular time in your schedule to do whatever it takes to keep the gears running smoothly.
Overview of design, classification and use
If your blog is out of date, content standards are unclear, or the site makes content and offerings difficult to navigate, you will have a hard time growing your audience.
Just because your blog is at its current stage is no reason to skip this step – it could be that the design elements, categories, and usability are what are keeping your blog from switching gears. Taxonomy customization can have major implications for organic search traffic, for example, and design considerations can make or break a user's ability to find what they're looking for.
Maintain your blog status with this method. Then it's time to see the progress of your blog.
How did you grow?
Developing a blog, like creating it from scratch, often requires an integrated approach. You may have luck with the method that works best, but if you don't want to overdo it, it's best to try a few of these ideas and see what works.
Find a way to reconnect
Again, start with your current loyal fan base. Find new ways to re-engage existing readers and build loyalty, and you'll see your traffic and engagement better.
Let's take a look at these options.
- Create free entry offers (such as contests or email bonus content series) or giveaways (giveaways, contests, etc.).
- Try a new engagement initiative. Maybe it's time to try out weekly video interviews, contests covering your Facebook page and blog, or Q&A podcasts with your readers?
- Ask your readers to find out what they think and what they need. This can go a long way for creating a sense of engagement beyond the daily blog comments and social media interactions. It can also provide valuable insights that you can use to reach new audiences.
- Maybe a new product can help you reconnect with your readers and give them something to talk about and help you on Twitter at the same time. Expanding existing product offerings to fill gaps in the reader experience can increase retention and engagement, bringing in new readers from segments of the product offering they haven't yet encountered.
Find new markets
For more mature blogs and brands, entering new markets is an important part of their growth strategy. This can be intimidating to some bloggers who are comfortable with their existing readership, but the extension opens up a lot of possibilities for your blog.
Here are some ideas to get you started.
- Try entering a new market using a specific advertising site. For example, you could write multiple guest posts for blog posts in different niches than your articles. So, for example, I could promote Click ! (and digital photography schools) via guest posts about baby photos on mom blogs or smartphone photo sites. They are not the main market place for DPS, but they can be a good way to enter a new segment of the photography market in general.
- Or, you can look at a niche or topic related to your blog and look for opportunities within it. For example, I might read about the growing iPhone lens market and decide to create DPS photography content with iPhone lenses specifically to target this market segment.
- Another approach is what traditional marketers call "line deployment." This includes developing new products that mirror your existing core offering but open up new markets. We currently have a digital photography school ebook. What if I turned some of these products into online courses with post-processing videos, cheats, etc.? What if we developed our own post-processing tool? These new products can open up new markets, and as an important side effect, they help us to further strengthen our relationships with our existing customers.
- If that sounds like a leap you're not ready to take, why not try different ways to monetize your existing blog and products? Maybe it's time to enter the affiliate marketing waters by offering a related product to your readers or creating an affiliate program for your own products. Or you should try advertising, media relations, or sponsorships - whatever works for you and your target market.
Find ways to get more out of what you do
Last but not least, take a look at your initial revisions and try to improve what works for your blog. Try using tactics or techniques that have worked in other markets or areas related to your topic.
- To get started, you can look at products that are selling well or advertising methods that are working to increase readership in a part of your audience. From there, you can develop a strategy to apply this model to your readers or other readers. If placement-targeted ads are successful on one of your products, you can work with other products or promote your original product in other markets.
- Consider becoming an "expert" at the type of promotion that seems especially effective for your brand, but for whatever reason you haven't already. Try SEO, content marketing, affiliate marketing, email marketing, whatever works for your niche or brand, or if it works in a new market segment or offers something you've already developed.

Try it and improve.
The process of trial and error, or trial and error, isn't just necessary for dealing with traffic jams. This is an invaluable process that will help you maximize your efforts and work smarter to gain a foothold in new markets in the future.
This is a collection of ideas, but I hope you enjoy some of them. Try one or two of these methods, track your results, and continually adjust and improve your efforts. You may be surprised at what you can achieve.
