When I asked readers about their regrets about making money, the answers were mixed. From bloggers who would like to start experimenting with advertising and affiliate programs sooner, to others who never want to start blogging because it's in their best interest. - There has been a distraction since they actually do it.

My personal blog experience

Sometimes I look back on my blogging career with regret that I didn't start a blog sooner and establish myself before the "competitors". I started websites almost 25 years ago (5 years before I started my first blog in 2002) and ran a personal blog for a year to see if I could make money blogging or start blogging about a certain topic.

If only someone could tell me what I know now. If I walk through the door, it will bring in an incredible amount of money.

It was said Part of me is so glad I didn't "go professional" and start commercializing my blog sooner. The first 12-18 months of personal blogs were very formative. I learned a lot about online communication, community building, writing, and how blogging works, so much so that when I started blogging commercially, I had a lot of skills that helped me quickly grow these new blogs.

Another great thing about that first year was that it instilled in me a love for blogging. I blog because I love it, not because of the dollar signs in my eyes. As a result, I wrote about things that interested me, and not about things that could bring in money.

In a way, that first blogging experience was an apprenticeship or training ground for what came later.

I see a lot of bloggers come across commercial type blogs and I think it takes months (or more) to learn how to start a personal blog. These blogs are often about topics they think will make them money (things they know and love). Have you seen these blogs? They've pasted all the ads (instead of presenting their own content as the main blog) and inserted boring and uninteresting content from elsewhere.

These blogs rarely last more than a few months because the blogger is frustrated by the lack of initial income (remember it takes a year or more for a blog to "pay") and has no real interest in continuing the blog.

Should a blog be monetized from day one?

It is always debated whether to start making money the same day you start a blog or not.

Now that I'm established as a blogger, my approach when starting a new blog is to include multiple sources of income from day one to create good expectations for my readers. But don't advertise too much on your blog (especially in the early days). note I disagree with my last point about training before blogging for money. it is more for bloggers who have blogged before and are starting a new blog. I have already written a lot about how to promote a blog quickly here.

Experiment with different sources of income

Another important tip I would like to give in this regard is to experiment with different ways of making money blogging. There are literally hundreds of ways to do this, each of which will suit different blogs. I post a list of the best ways to make money blogging semi-regularly, and while AdSense is one of my main sources of income, the rest of the list changes as I experiment with different sources of income.

Also remember to make money directly from your blog. Some blogs may never make a lot of money, but they have the potential to increase blogger authority, increasing income in other indirect ways.

Eligibility and Location

Another lesson that took me a while to learn about how to make money blogging is the importance of having an income that is relevant to the content you write. I still remember how, in the early days of my personal blog, I criticized Amazon affiliate products for being the most expensive electrical products I could find. However, they never regretted it. Over time, I learned that a cheap affiliate product could get you a lot more than a post about that actual product.

The other problem with my initial attempt to monetize Amazon was my positioning. I put the ads in the sidebar (mostly at the bottom of the page). Of course, affiliate products don't convert very well there; people need to see it, and if it's close to your content (or rather, they'll be better).

The importance of good traffic

Earlier this week, I spoke with a blogger who told me that he was very upset that his website was getting so much traffic, but not making much money. I inquired further and found that the guy was getting a few thousand impressions a week, but it was enough to pay his server load (which was enough).

When I dug into the source of his traffic, he told me it was coming from a traffic generation service. He heard that all he has to do is generate a lot of traffic and he will get rich. I explained that traffic has different characteristics and will translate into different income depending on where it comes from.

Purchased traffic usually doesn't convert well with ads or affiliate programs (in fact, many ad programs will ban you if you use them). Also, traffic from bookmarked social sites like Digg is much harder to monetize with contextual advertising like AdSense than traffic from search engines.

Work on increasing your traffic, but remember that not all traffic is created equal. It took me about a year to really learn.
