"What are the first steps to optimize my blog for search engine?" - Question submitted by @monedays on Twitter using the hashtag #pbquestions .

Much has been written on the topic of SEO for bloggers, but let me give you some basic first steps.

1. Content is king

The quality of the articles you write is the most important factor when it comes to optimizing your blog for search engines. I doubt others would argue otherwise, but judging by the success of my blog in the search engines, I'd say it was the first factor.

Quality content that helps attract people who often want to share what readers write. Of course they do this by linking to your post and often in a way that helps your rankings. blog, for example).

2. Predict what people will search for

Whenever you write an article, you should automatically consider the words that people might type into search engines to find this type of information. Once you know what kind of words they are using, you are in the right position for that search.

3. Securities Securities Securities

There are a few things to consider when it comes to titles. Google pays special attention to headlines, so make sure you read them carefully.

  • First, make sure your blog creation form puts your post title in the "title tags" at the bottom of your blog. It's really important.
  • If you're only looking at it from an SEO perspective, don't include your blog name in individual post title tags. This dilutes your keywords. Of course, if you're looking for more branding, it can help to include your blog name in your title tags.
  • Next: Include the keywords you mentioned in step 2 in your post title
  • Also, remember that the words you use at the beginning of the title carry more weight than the words you use later in the title.

4. Keywords from other parts of your post

Also use the keywords you mentioned in step 2 in your post. If you want Google to rank for a term or phrase, you must use that term or phrase. Use it in your post captions (use h tags when you can), use them in the content itself, use words in image alt tags, and more. Don't go off topic, but use the words of course wherever you can in the post.

5. Linking to Your Posts

Don't overdo it, but while linking to other sites is a great way to improve your blog's rankings, linking to your own blog is also a good way. Post your posts to share where readers can find more information on your topic (if available), but consider linking to your main blog posts from other places on your blog (sidebar, page host, etc.).

6. External links to your blog

Your links from other sites are important for SEO, but they can be difficult. Start linking to your blog from other sites you own or are active in. Some (like Twitter) aren't that important because they have tags you don't follow, but these are all possible ways to get to your site, and some will help you with SEO.

Don't obsess over getting links, obsess over writing quality content and the links will usually come in time. However, if you've written a great post that might be relevant to another blog, don't be afraid to let that blog or website owner know. you can invest.

Also, be aware of the types of posts you write that can cause other sites to link to you. This way, you can learn a lot about creating related content and you can develop a technique that will work over and over again.

7. Plugins

I haven't done much on the backend of my blog to change things like meta tags, but if you're using WordPress, there are some good plugins that can help you with some of these and give you a little edge. Check out these 9 SEO plugins every WordPress blog should have for some tips.

8. Lots of readers

It's not an SEO technique, but it serves a purpose. The more readers you have, the more likely your blog will be found by other readers. Over time, the site "snowballs"; As you gain frequent readers, momentum builds as those readers refer your site to others on the web. They link to you, tag you, tweet about you, email your friends, blog about you, recommend your website in recommendation engines...

All of this has nothing to do with SEO, but some of it is important, and accumulated over time definitely helps increase organic and search traffic. I guess what I'm saying is engage your readers in every way possible, don't just focus on "SEO". Everything is important.

My intuition with SEO

Before I share my bias...let me tell you that I'm no SEO expert and this could be completely wrong...but that's the impression I've had for a long time.

I've been blogging for almost 7 years and from what I see, the changes that many bloggers make to optimize their blogs seem to have less and less impact on blog rankings. Don't get me wrong. I fully respect the advice above and would do this as a reasonable minimum, but from my position Google seems to have a responsibility to find the best possible information for its users. They don't always get it right, but I think they do a pretty good job.

As a blogger, your job should be to provide the best information possible.

I'm amazed that Google has more and more ways to determine if your data is correct. It's not just about the keywords you have or the links you get, but today it has Feedburner (knowing how many people subscribe to your blog and what links people click), it has Google Reader (again, it gives them is big data types. ), be it Gmail, Google Analytics, YouTube etc…..

Now, you may or may not use all of their page rank data, but it can definitely tell you a lot about your blog and the posts you write. In addition, over the past 6 months, there has been increased talk that search engines may begin to generate data about content shared on social networks and bookmarking sites.

My point is that traditional SEO methods are less important (but NOT unimportant) and other factors will come into play more and more. I'm sure some will find ways to manipulate it (SEO 2.0?), but increasingly the way to rank high in Google is to keep producing quality content and make sure they sneeze on your web.

Help this process along by giving your readers a way to share (and post to social media) and subscribe to your content.
